Cat scratch posts are a vital addition to any cat owner’s home.  This is especially true now that the prevailing thought is that cat scratching issues can be adequately resolved without resorting to having your furry friend declawed.

Let’s face it.  Cats instinctively scratch.

The focus, then, should be less on stopping the scratching behavior, and more on directing such behaviors to a more appropriate surface in your house.  However, to effectively prevent your pet from destroying your home, follow the suggestions set forth below.

First, buy a cat scratch post prior to bringing a kitten or cat into your home.  This will provide your pet with a scratching outlet from day one and help prevent destructive behaviors from developing.

Of course, many cat owners may be searching for solutions for their animal that has already started ruining their carpets and furniture.  If that is the case, it is advisable to place the cat post near the location of the cat’s favorite scratching spot.

In more situations than not, this is all that is needed to eliminate the problem.  If, however, your cat continues with its behavior, simply buy more than one.  Do not get hung up on the added costs.  After all, it is cheaper and humane that the declawing alternative.

Second, make sure you keep your cat’s claws properly trimmed.  This process is usually more traumatic for the owner than it is for the pet.  However, to make things easier for yourself, buy cat nail clippers specifically designed for the job at hand.

Additionally, start the process in a smaller room, such as your bathroom.  That way, you cat cannot envision escaping the process and will likely just give in to the process.

Third, take measures to prevent additional inappropriate scratching from occurring.  One way to do this is to cut off access to places where your cat previously scratched.  If your cat’s favorite spot was your favorite chair, cover it with a towel or some other temporary cover.

After awhile, you cat will focus its attention to where you want:  the cat scratch posts.

Finally, keep your cat from becoming bored.  Despite what most owners may believe, cats are animals.  Excessive scratching is, in large part, one of the many ways your cat can relieve its stress.  Engaging your pet in half an hour of quality play time is recommended.

Be sure to tailor your activities to encourage your cat’s natural activities such as jumping, running and pouncing.  Not only will you get to enjoy the time with your cat, you will see a decrease in your cat’s inappropriate scratching.

We love our cats; that’s for sure. But this does not mean you have to deal with their ridiculously sharp claws! It is amazing how such a sweet little kitten can slice open a leather sofa in 30 seconds or less. Fortunately, when you put cat claw covers on their paws you can reduce the amount of damage they can do!
